German Union Seeks to Expedite Constitutional Court Judge Election in Parliament
The German Union has expressed its intention to hold a swift election for a new Constitutional Court judge in the Bundestag, following the Federal Constitutional Court’s recommendations. According to Ansgar Heveling, the CDU’s justice spokesperson, the party aims to conduct the election in the Bundestag in line with the current provisions of the Federal Constitutional Court Act.
Meanwhile, the Left Party has called for a greater say in the election of Constitutional Court judges. Party leader Jan van Aken emphasized the need for a change in the key that determines who nominates the judges, stating that the Left is willing to engage in talks with the Union to achieve this goal. However, van Aken made it clear that the Left will not simply accept the outcome without being involved in the negotiations from the start.
A two-thirds majority is required to elect a Constitutional Court judge, a feat that the Union and SPD can only achieve with the support of the Left and the Greens in the Bundestag.
