BREAKTHROUGH IN UKRAINE WAR NOT IMMINENT, MERZ WARNS

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Expects No Quick Breakthrough in Ukraine Peace Talks

Despite intensified efforts towards a ceasefire in Ukraine, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz does not expect a swift breakthrough, he said in a statement following a meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda in Vilnius.

“We’re not making ourselves any illusions. There’s no quick solution” Merz emphasized, referencing his recent phone conversations with US President Donald Trump. The Chancellor acknowledged that diplomatic efforts may not yield immediate results, but emphasized that no viable option would be left unexplored in the pursuit of a peaceful resolution.

The process of achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine is just beginning, Merz noted and may take weeks or even months to unfold. He expressed confidence that European partners, alongside the US, share the understanding that a collective effort is essential to the success of the endeavor.

In his conversations with the US administration, Merz aims to convey this shared perspective, stating that he believes a significant portion of the American government and Congress shares this view. As a result, the Chancellor plans to continue the dialogue in this direction.
