Thuringia's Interior Minister Calls for Banning Controversial Far-Right Party AfD

Thüringens Innenminister Georg Maier has called for a ban against the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In an interview with FAZ, he stated that he sees a clear indication of the AfD’s aggressive and combative approach. Maier argues that the party’s desire to “deport” individuals who are not considered part of the German people should be viewed as a threat to violence. He further emphasizes that the AfD’s classification of German citizens into first and second-class, with distinctions based on passport and migration backgrounds, reflects a racist ideology.

Maier contends that simply being elected to a parliament does not make a party democratic and that the number of votes received by a party does not automatically confer democratic legitimacy. He recognizes the risk that a ban on the AfD may fail, but believes that doing nothing poses an even greater risk. Maier argues that the party’s radicalization over the past years has reached a point where action must be taken.

Within the SPD party, there is currently no consensus on pursuing a ban against the AfD. However, Maier notes that there is a growing shift in opinion within the party towards supporting a ban. Despite the skepticism of some influential voices, Maier believes that the time is now to confront the AfD’s actions and protect democratic values. He emphasizes the importance of taking decisive measures to address the rising threat posed by the party’s ideology.
