Grünen leader demands more women in defense leadership roles

Grünen-Chefin Franziska Brantner criticizes the black-red coalition for exclusively appointing men to leadership positions in defense policy. “What kind of women’s image is being represented here? At a time when the Bundeswehr urgently needs more people and should specifically target women, it seems that a purely male team is being preferred” said Brantner to the “Bild am Sonntag”. “This is not only politically incorrect, but also shortsighted from a security policy perspective.”

The trigger for her criticism is that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has appointed four men as state secretaries since the new government took office. During the previous coalition, there was a parliamentary state secretary, Siemtje Möller (SPD). The defense commissioner, Eva Högl (SPD), is set to be replaced by CDU member Henning Otte (CDU) next week. The presidency of the defense committee will be taken over by CDU member Thomas Röwekamp.
