SPD Leader Lars Klingbeil believes that the presence of predominantly male leadership positions in the ruling parties and factions does not equate to a loss of power for women. When asked about the lack of female representation in the top leadership roles of the CDU, CSU and SPD, which are held exclusively by men except for the co-chair of the SPD, Klingbeil responded to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Sunday editions): “Saskia Esken, Bärbel Bas, Manuela Schwesig and Anke Rehlinger would rightfully reject such a statement and I would not either.”
Klingbeil pointed to the high percentage of women in the SPD’s governing bodies: “The party fraction is led by more women than men, we have two strong female state premiers and at the party’s top level, we have a dual leadership with three female vice-presidents. And that is the right way to go.”
According to Klingbeil, the cabinet, the party’s executive board and the fraction leadership are the most important decision-making bodies within the SPD. Additionally, he explained that the SPD has sent a team of six women and three men to the government. He stated: “Of course, we can always improve. That is also my goal.” Parity is considered a given within the SPD and for Klingbeil himself.
Regarding the decision to become the vice chancellor and finance minister after the historic defeat in the Bundestag elections, while his co-chair Saskia Esken did not enter the cabinet and will not remain as party leader, Klingbeil explained that all decisions at the top level were made together. It was not about “decisions against individuals” but rather about rebuilding the SPD.
However, he acknowledged the difficult decisions and heavy responsibility faced by Esken and the outgoing labor minister Hubertus Heil during the past weeks. Nonetheless, he believes that the SPD has the potential to move forward and improve. For Klingbeil, gender equality is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
