CDU and Grüne request Current Hour on Arrest of Alleged Spies Planning to Sabotage Freight Transport in Germany
In preparation for the upcoming plenary session, the CDU and Grüne factions in the Düsseldorf State Parliament have requested a Current Hour to discuss the arrest of alleged spies, as reported by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. The suspects were allegedly planning to use parcel bombs to carry out sabotage acts against freight transport in Germany. Grünen-Fraktionsvize Julia Höller spoke to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), stating: “The recent arrests demonstrate, in a distressing way, that the long arm of the Kremlin reaches into our neighboring areas – not with soldiers, but with `pocket agents` in the shadows.”
According to Höller, Russia aims to attack democracy through sabotage acts. She added, “We are in a hybrid war with Russia. Therefore, it is a really good news that the investigations were successful.”
CDU-Fraktionsvize Gregor Golland also commented on the matter, telling the “Rheinische Post”: “Russia’s hybrid warfare targets our open society and our country – also in North Rhine-Westphalia. Infrastructure is being deliberately sabotaged and people’s lives are at risk. We must resolutely defend ourselves against this.”
In their request for a Current Hour, the factions emphasize the need for a societal and political debate on how to handle this threat. They write, “The State Parliament must therefore address the matter in the context of a Current Hour.”
This request highlights the growing concern over potential threats to Germany’s infrastructure and the need for increased vigilance and preparedness in the face of hybrid warfare. The upcoming plenary session will provide an opportunity for further discussion and the development of strategies to counteract these threats. As the situation evolves, it is crucial for all parties involved to work together to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
