Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz expresses disappointment over the outcome of the Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul. Merz, in a meeting with European leaders in Tirana, said, “We have discussed the progress of efforts to hold ceasefire negotiations with Russia with this group and President Selenskyj for the second time in just a few days.” He added, “We are in agreement that the Russian side had a good opportunity this week to initiate talks on a peace agreement with a prior ceasefire agreement. We are very disappointed that this did not happen.” Merz also mentioned that they have spoken to US President Donald Trump and will continue to keep him informed about the progress of their side’s talks. The goal is to continue making offers to facilitate conversations and help Ukraine end the war. Merz emphasized that they will not give up and will continue to coordinate with the Americans on the European side. Despite the efforts made so far, the diplomatic endeavors have failed due to Russia’s lack of willingness to take the first steps in the right direction. However, they remain determined to help Ukraine.
