Left-Wing Politician Booted from Session for Wearing Basque Cap

Marcel Bauer, a member of the Left Party in the German Bundestag, was asked to leave the plenary session by Vice President Andrea Lindholz (CSU) for wearing a Basque cap. “If you do not remove it and leave the room, I hereby exclude you from today’s session” Lindholz said.

Beforehand in the debate, Bundestag President Klöckner had also urged the new member to remove his head covering. According to the house rules, this is mandatory.

Bauer, who appeared relatively unbothered by the repeated request from the vice president, briefly went to the presidency, possibly to say goodbye, put on his jacket and left the plenary hall. The 33-year-old is a forester and was elected to the Bundestag for the first time this year as the sixth candidate on the Baden-Württemberg list of the Left Party.
