On the proposal of the eastern German state federations, Petra Köpping is to become the deputy chairman of the SPD. This was announced by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Minister President, Manuela Schwesig, in an interview with “Spiegel”. “She is a strong voice for social justice and a fighter for East Germany” said Schwesig.
Köpping, who is 66 years old, is the Minister of Social Affairs in Saxony. In the SPD, it had long been speculated that she could join the cabinet. Klara Geywitz, who has been the deputy party leader so far, will not be seeking re-election, as she lacks support within the party. Schwesig thanked her for her “dedicated work”.
