The Federal Press Office has finally handed over the reins to the new government spokesman, Stefan Kornelius, after several days of delay. The handover was initially planned for the previous Tuesday, but was disrupted due to Merz’s failure to win the Chancellor election in the first round. Kornelius was praised by Merz for possessing all the necessary qualities to successfully handle the challenges of the position. Merz also emphasized the importance of the Federal Press Office as a central hub for democratic communication and its role in strengthening trust in democracy. Kornelius expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Hebestreit and expressed excitement for his new role “on the other side.” The 59-year-old has had a long career at the “Süddeutschen Zeitung” where he served as a correspondent in Bonn, Washington and Berlin before taking on the role of the newspaper’s political chief. Kornelius has been leading the Foreign Policy department since 2000 and served as the political chief of the SZ until recently.
