Condemning Hamas Attack and Urging Ceasefire

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) emphasized the importance of German-Israeli relations ahead of his departure to Israel and the Palestinian territories. In a statement on Saturday, he reaffirmed the commitment to the existence and security of Israel as part of Germany’s national interest, 80 years after the Holocaust. He added that these relationships are a “valuable gift” for Germany.

Wadephul strongly condemned the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 and supported Israel’s right to defend itself. He expressed understanding for the trauma caused by the attack in Israel. At the same time, he called for serious negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of all hostages to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

The Foreign Minister also called for a perspective on a political and economic future for the Palestinians in the West Bank, to counteract hatred and extremism. He reaffirmed the belief that a two-state solution is the best chance for peace and security in the region.
