Statistical Office: Insolvency Applications Spike in April

In April 2025, the number of filed bankruptcy cases in Germany increased by 3.3 percent compared to the same month in the previous year. This growth rate was similar to the March 2025 increase of 5.7 percent, after experiencing double-digit growth rates from July 2024 to January 2025, according to provisional data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In February 2025, the Amtsgerichte reported a total of 2,068 filed corporate insolvencies, an increase of 15.9 percent compared to February 2024. The claims of creditors for the insolvencies filed in February 2025 amounted to approximately 9 billion euros, compared to 4.1 billion euros in February 2024. On a per 10,000 company basis, there were a total of 6.0 insolvencies in Germany in February 2025. The highest number of insolvencies per 10,000 companies was in the transportation and storage sector with 10.0 cases, followed by other economic services (such as staffing agencies) with 9.3 cases and the hospitality industry with 9.0 insolvencies. In February 2025, Destatis reported a total of 6,075 consumer insolvencies, an increase of 4.8 percent compared to the same month in 2024. It should be noted that the data only reflects the first decision of the insolvency court and the actual date of the bankruptcy filing is usually about three months earlier.
