Merz and Trump discuss Ukraine war, call for ceasefire and closer cooperation

Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) and US President Donald Trump had a phone conversation on Thursday evening. According to a statement by the government spokesman Stefan Kornelius, Trump congratulated Merz on his new position. Merz assured Trump that, 80 years after the end of World War II, the United States remained an indispensable friend and partner for Germany. Both leaders agreed to work closely together to achieve the goal of ending the war in Ukraine. Trump shared Merz’s view that the violence in Ukraine must come to an end and Russia must agree to a ceasefire to make room for negotiations.

Trump stated that he would strongly support the German efforts, along with France, the UK, Poland and other European partners, to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine. They also agreed to swiftly resolve trade disputes. Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication and announced plans for reciprocal visits to the United States and Germany.

Earlier in the evening, Merz had also spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and pledged his support.
