Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday. According to a statement by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius in the evening, President Zelensky congratulated Merz on his assumption of office.
Merz affirmed Germany’s solidarity with Ukraine, assuring that the new German government can rely on this support. Both agreed that Russia must agree to a ceasefire. They also praised the mediation efforts of US President Donald Trump. Merz emphasized that Germany supports these efforts in close collaboration with France, the United Kingdom and European partners. This includes helping Ukraine defend itself effectively against Russian aggression and exerting pressure on Russia. The two leaders agreed to maintain close communication.
