The Conclave in the Sistine Chapel has elected a new Pope. White smoke from the chimney of the chapel signaled on Thursday evening that two-thirds of the 133 cardinals had agreed on a candidate in the fifth ballot.
It is expected that the new Pope will give the blessing “Urbi et orbi” to the attending faithful on St. Peter’s Square around 7 p.m. The new head of the Catholic Church succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.
