Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) emphasized the shared European responsibility for migration during his visit to Warsaw. “We will carry out border controls in a way that is acceptable to our European neighbors” said Merz on Wednesday evening. He had discussed with Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) the need to always seek contact with European neighbors.
Merz also announced his intention to build a monument commemorating the occupation of Warsaw during the Nazi era “as soon as possible” and to erect a temporary monument until the construction of the permanent one.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that the German-Polish border should be considered as “a shared responsibility” and pointed to a focus on protecting the “external European borders.” He stated that Poland would not accept deportations to Poland and warned that sending asylum seekers across the border would lead to “total chaos.” A longer “planning perspective” is needed, he argued.
Tusk also referred to the Ukraine conflict and that Germany and Poland, together with other NATO partners, must continue to support Ukraine against Russia.
