Former German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has expressed his belief that a potential collaboration between the Union and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) after the 2029 Bundestagswahl is a possibility. In an interview with the “Spiegel” Guttenberg stated, “I do not consider it impossible.”
He went on to explain that the AfD could potentially reach a 35% share of the vote if the new government fails to successfully address the challenges it faces within two years and regain the trust of the population. Guttenberg emphasized that a definitive exclusion is not currently possible due to this 35% possibility, which he hopes will not materialize. He added, “Given this 35% option, which I hope will never come to pass, an exclusion in 2029, in light of the actors involved, cannot be ruled out. In the worst-case scenario, they would become junior partners.”
However, Guttenberg also clarified that he does not support such a development. “I hope that none of this happens.” He believes that the coming years will be crucial in determining the outcome. “The pressure is mounting and these next two years will be decisive” Guttenberg said. He emphasized that there is a limited time frame for making significant progress and stated, “I believe that the patience of the people will not extend beyond two years.”
Overall, Guttenberg’s comments suggest a potential for collaboration between the Union and the AfD in the future, but he expresses hope that this scenario will not come to fruition. He highlights the importance of addressing the challenges facing the government and regaining the trust of the population within the next two years.
