Heidi Reichinnek, the chairwoman of the Left Party, has suggested to the Union to cooperate on the reform of the debt brake and the election of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court. “We are ready for talks on an equal footing if it comes to real changes in favor of the majority” Reichinnek said in an article published by “taz” on Wednesday. She mentioned the reform of the debt brake “or better still its abolition” and the elections of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court. The Union’s cooperation with the Left in the Bundestag during the election of Friedrich Merz allowed for a second round on the same day. For constitutional changes and the election of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court, a two-thirds majority is required. The new Union and SPD government will need the support of the Left or the AfD to achieve this. Reichinnek stated that the Union will have to “put their ideological blinkers aside.” She added that the new Chancellor should be aware that he cannot avoid cooperation with the Left on certain issues. The incompatibility decision of the Union was always inappropriate and is now no longer practical. “If it comes to concrete improvements for the everyday lives of people, we have always said that we are ready for constructive talks with all democratic factions – including the Merz government” Reichinnek concluded.
