Ukraine Crisis: Germany's Role in Solidarity with War-Torn Country

On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Welthungerhilfe has appealed to the new federal government to support Ukraine in its war with Russia. “The 8th of May 1945 was a day of liberation. After 80 years of peace and prosperity in Europe, this date is a reminder and a call to action today” said the president of the aid organization, Marlehn Thieme, to the “New Osnabrück Newspaper” (NOZ). “Currently, we are witnessing the highest number of conflicts worldwide since the Second World War and hunger is also on the rise” said Thieme’s sad assessment. “We must support those who suffer from armed conflicts and their consequences in the form of displacement and violence. This is particularly relevant for the people in Ukraine these days.” Welthungerhilfe staff on the ground reported that the question of international solidarity for the people in Ukraine was decisive and they are fighting again for their survival after 80 years. “The lived legacy of experience with war and peace makes Germany’s role in the world and not just its economic strength” said Thieme. “There is a connection between the globally active, strong economic nation and the responsibility for people affected by war, hunger and the climate crisis. We see it as our task to effectively shape this solidarity.
