Thüringens SPD-Landesvorsitzender Georg Maier has called on the black-red coalition to address the economic and social differences between East and West Germany, following the appointment of Elisabeth Kaiser, a native of Thuringia, as the new Eastern Germany commissioner. Maier told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the focus should be on addressing the structural deficits of East Germany in order to attract business and make the social gap between East and West a priority, including the wage gap, pension gap and differences in wealth. Maier praised Kaiser, saying that she is well-known and engaged in her hometown of Gera and that she is familiar with the political processes in Berlin as a parliamentary state secretary. Maier also noted that Kaiser and Carsten Schneider, the future Federal Minister of the Environment and former Eastern Germany commissioner, are both from Thuringia and expressed his satisfaction with the appointments.
