The Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) have reportedly suddenly stopped a charter flight with refugees from Sudan. According to reports by “Bild” (Tuesday edition), the plane was supposed to fly via Kenya to Hannover on Wednesday. However, the flight was canceled and postponed on Monday morning. The plane was supposed to carry “particularly vulnerable refugees” from Sudan and Somalia, who were proposed for resettlement through the EU Resettlement Program by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Germany had already agreed to the intake. The designated Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), has announced that he wants to review voluntary intake programs and stop them if necessary. Sudan has been plagued by a devastating civil war for two years. Nearly two-thirds of the population rely on humanitarian aid. According to UN estimates, around twelve million people have been displaced, mainly women and girls who are repeatedly exposed to sexual violence in the war. Somalia has been shaken by internal conflicts for decades and regular extreme weather events in the Horn of Africa have added to the suffering. Historically severe droughts leading to famines and devastating floods have alternated in recent years.
