Following the re-evaluation of the AfD by the Constitutional Protection, Verdi service sector union chief, Frank Werneke, has called for preparations to be made for an AfD ban process. Speaking to the Funke Media Group’s newspapers (Monday), Werneke said: “An AfD ban process does not replace the daily political confrontation with the AfD and the reduction of its social influence. After the classification of the AfD as definitely right-wing extremist, it is time to prepare a ban process, which I expect from the states and the federal government.” Werneke made it clear at the same time that, in his opinion, members of the AfD are not acceptable in the public service, if they are exercising official duties. There have been clear formulations on this for a long time in the collective agreements, such as those for the federal government and the municipalities. It says there that the employees must “through their entire behavior acknowledge the free democratic basic order in accordance with the Basic Law.” Werneke said: “This standard applies to civil servants without exception. Therefore, membership in a definitely right-wing extremist party like the AfD is not permissible for employees of the public service who exercise official duties and thus represent our state in a special sense.” The Federal Agency for Constitutional Protection had announced on Friday that it now classifies the entire AfD as definitely right-wing extremist. Previously, the party had been a right-wing extremist suspicion case. Some federal states had already classified the respective state branches of the AfD as definitely right-wing extremist. What consequences the re-evaluation could have for state employees will also be a topic at the next meeting of the state interior ministers, which will take place in Bremen in June.
