Help Merz Win Over AfD in East Germany

SPD Ministerpräsidentin Manuela Schwesig calls for political responsibility in East Germany

Manuela Schwesig, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Ministerpräsidentin of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has urged her party to take on a sense of responsibility in the face of political challenges in East Germany. In an interview with the “Bericht aus Berlin” of ARD, Schwesig described the current situation as the “hardest test of our democracy.”

Schwesig pointed out that neither the CDU nor the SPD have gained much trust in the entire region of East Germany, but the AfD has. “The AfD is already a reality with its radical and aggressive approach on the ground, as well as intimidating people” she stated.

She called on SPD supporters to contribute to the success of the black-red coalition government at the federal level. “I would very much like Herr Merz to be successful as Chancellor with this government” she said, emphasizing the importance of working together to regain the trust in a capable government and in the democracy itself. The people of the region desire secure jobs with good income, affordable housing and quality schools and daycare centers.

Landtag elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled for next year and Schwesig hopes to be re-elected. However, in current polls, the AfD is leading with a significant margin over the SPD and CDU. Despite this, Schwesig’s call for political responsibility and cooperation highlights the need for political parties to address the concerns of the people and regain their trust.
