New Interior Minister Dobrindt Tightens Migration Controls From Wednesday

On the day after his appointment, incoming Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) will order increased refusals of migrants and enhanced controls at all German borders. “The first decisions will be made after taking office on this Wednesday. This will involve ramping up border controls and increasing refusals” Dobrindt told “Bild am Sonntag”.

There will be no border closures. “The numbers of illegal migration must decrease. To achieve both humanity and order, control, clarity and consistency are needed. We are preparing national and European decisions for this” said Dobrindt.

According to “Bild am Sonntag”, in addition to the currently 11,000 deployed federal police officers, several thousand more officers will be added as reinforcements for border controls.

States also support border controls to some extent. Thomas Strobl (CDU), Minister of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg, announced “even more intensified border controls by the state police in the border region”. The state police are already primarily engaged in border areas with road controls and cloakroom surveillance.

Furthermore, a flexible strategy will be intensified: aerial surveillance. Helicopters will monitor in the vicinity of border controls in order to adjust controls accordingly to the routes that smugglers are taking to avoid controls.
