Tsunami Warning for Chilean Coast

Tsunami Warning for Chilean Coast

On Friday, a strong earthquake occurred in the Drake Strait, also known as the Sea of Hoces, between the southernmost tip of South America and the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Geologists initially estimated the magnitude to be 7.4 to 7.5, which is often revised later. The earthquake occurred at approximately 14:59 UTC, about 220 kilometers away from the Argentine city of Ushuaia. The epicenter was located at a depth of about 48 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) considers destructive tsunami waves possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter along the coast of Chile. The authorities in the affected areas should inform and provide instructions to the population based on their own assessment.
