Germans protest on May Day in Berlin, violence reported
On May Day, demonstrations took place in Berlin, with some violence reported. During the traditional “Revolutionary May Day Demo” in Neukölln and Kreuzberg, at least one participant was detained, allegedly for throwing a bottle at police, which caused an injury to one officer. The demonstration attracted over 20,000 people, who protested against various issues, including capitalism and the system, as well as the designated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Palestinian flags were also seen, criticizing Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. In the Görlitzer Park, a small gathering of protesters demonstrated against a planned fence with a rave. Berlin’s Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) described the day as initially “very peaceful” but violence has decreased over the years. Although there were skirmishes between the left-wing protesters and police in previous years, particularly on the night of May 1st, violence has generally declined.
