US President Donald Trump plans to nominate his National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, as the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Trump announced this on his personal website on Thursday. Waltz has “worked hard to put the interests of our nation first” Trump wrote. “I know that he will do so in his new role as well. In the meantime, Secretary Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor and continue his strong leadership role at the State Department.”
Prior to this announcement, several US media outlets reported that Waltz was to be fired. The background for this personnel decision appears to be a report by a journalist of the magazine “The Atlantic”, who was accidentally added to a chat group by Waltz. In this group, plans for a military operation against the Houthi militia in Yemen are said to have been shared. Waltz confirmed the existence of the group, but denied, contrary to the screenshots published by the journalist, that classified information was shared and that the journalist was added to the group by him. Currently, there is a proceeding against the participants in the chat who are suspected of violating the Federal Records Act and the Administrative Procedure Act.
