Death of Suspected Nazi Perpetrator Halts Trial for 3,322 Murders at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

The Landgericht Hanau has discontinued proceedings against a suspected Nazi perpetrator. As the court announced on Wednesday, the accused, who was charged with aiding and abetting 3,322 murders at the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp, has passed away.

Due to the accused’s death, the competent Youth Chamber rejected the opening of the main trial, as there is now an obstacle to the proceedings. With the decision under Section 204(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the case is now definitively closed. The legal process was only initiated in the morning after the Landgericht had previously postponed it due to the man’s health condition.

The accused was originally charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Gießen for serving as a member of the SS guard units from July 1943 to February 1945 at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
