WFP Warns of Catastrophic Consequences Due to Severe Aid Cuts

The World Food Programme (WFP) is concerned about the potential devastating consequences of cuts to humanitarian aid. The WFP deputy executive director, Rania Dagash-Kamara, told the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday) that “this year, funds have been significantly reduced not only for the World Food Programme, but for all humanitarian measures.” She added that “we have observed this among most of our major donors. One of the reasons for the cuts is the strong domestic political pressure. There is also a certain fatigue or resignation in the face of so many crises.” Dagash-Kamara also stated that “our greatest concern is that we will not be able to mobilize the necessary funds. This would irreversibly change our entire humanitarian aid system.” Regarding the future German government, she said “Germany is one of our most generous donors. We welcome that the future government wants to strengthen humanitarian aid, as stated in the coalition agreement. We hope that they will uphold this promise.
