The Federal Police in Lower Saxony have made a significant arrest against a suspected smuggling gang on Tuesday. The state prosecutor in Görlitz ordered the arrest warrant and search warrants in Hameln, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Approximately 100 Federal Police officers were involved in the operation. The ministry stated that the operation was a continuation of the Federal Police’s effort to crack down on smuggling gangs. The gang was suspected of smuggling over 1,000 mostly Syrian and Iraqi nationals into Germany through Poland. The individuals were allegedly smuggled into the EU through the Belarusian border before making their way to Poland. The Federal Police’s efforts have been successful in disrupting smuggling routes, as they have conducted extensive investigations and increased border controls. Since October 2023, the Federal Police has arrested approximately 2,200 smugglers through internal border controls. In 2024, around 10,000 smuggled individuals were identified, while in 2023, the number was around 40,000. These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of the Federal Police’s efforts to combat organized smuggling. The Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong stance against smuggling gangs and the continued commitment to disrupting smuggling routes.
