The European Commission has promised financial aid for the German businesses that were previously affected by the foot-and-mouth disease. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture announced this on Tuesday. The support will be provided as part of an extraordinary market support measure to mitigate the consequences of disease control. The aid will be available for dairy cattle farms in the quarantine and surveillance zones, as well as all pig farms for fattening in Brandenburg. The European Commission will prepare an implementing regulation in the next step, in which the exact amount of the aid will be determined and announced. “With the approval of the European Commission, the affected businesses in Brandenburg can breathe a sigh of relief” said Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir. The financial aid is important for them to continue operations. “My goal has always been that no business has to close down due to foot-and-mouth disease.” Germany is now officially considered free of foot-and-mouth disease, according to the World Organization for Animal Health. Brandenburg has estimated the damage at slightly over eight million euros.
