IG Metall’s Chaja Boebel criticizes trade unions’ stance towards right-wing initiatives in companies. Boebel, who is responsible for basic issues and social policy in the IG Metall’s executive board, stated in an interview with the daily newspaper “nd.DerTag” (Tuesday edition) that trade unions have become complacent and overlooked the impact of social policy debates on businesses. This has contributed to the rise of extreme right-wing groups in companies. Simply explaining decisions made by the cafeteria committee is not enough; it is also important to demonstrate the need for democracy and how the Alternative for Germany (AfD) poses a threat. The AfD gains support in companies where there is uncertainty about transformation, such as in the field of e-mobility. Boebel argues that this is due to the dissatisfaction with an anti-emancipatory welfare policy. The focus should be on re-evaluating democratic foundations and discussing how to create an inclusive solidarity that encompasses all groups.
