Russian President Vladimir Putin has unexpectedly announced a three-day ceasefire for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Ukraine. The ceasefire is set to last from May 8th to 11th, according to the Kremlin. During this time, “all hostilities” will be suspended, it said. “Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example” the Kremlin stated. It remains unclear how Kiev will respond. Russian authorities added that in the event of a breach of the ceasefire by Ukraine, they will provide a “suitable and effective response.”
Earlier this year, Putin had also declared a short-lived ceasefire during Easter, which was largely ignored.
