According to an exclusive INSA survey commissioned by eXXpress, the FPÖ remains at the top of voter preferences. The party of Herbert Kickl currently receives 34% of the votes, comfortably ahead of the two established ruling parties. The SPÖ comes in at 22%, narrowly ahead of the ÖVP, which only scores 20% and lands in third place. There is thus a close battle between the two parties for the second place, with a significant gap behind the dominant FPÖ. The Greens and NEOS score identically with 9% each, while the KPÖ would miss the National Council with 3%. Smaller groups score a total of six percent. The survey shows that the FPÖ’s rise continues, while the former Chancellor party, the ÖVP, increasingly settles in the middle of the pack. Despite massive accusations and ongoing investigations into possible misappropriation of party funds, the FPÖ continues to be the strongest political force in Austria. The center of the current scandal is former party leader Heinz-Christian Strache, who is accused of jointly with close associates of having private expenses in millions of euros – including vacations, rental payments, monitoring costs and everyday expenses – accounted for through party funds. Also, Vienna’s FPÖ chief Dominik Nepp is mentioned in this context, but he and Strache both claim their innocence. Both are presumed innocent. The FPÖ sees the reporting as targeted political attacks and a campaign against the party just before important elections. Nevertheless, these revelations seem to have little impact on public support so far – the Freiheitlichen continue to lead in polls.
