In recent times, social realities have become overshadowed by the war rhetoric, leading to the opposite situation where calls for social cuts are being made. Veronika Grimm, a self-proclaimed “economist” is advocating for the abolition of widow’s and mother’s pension. Grimm, who is well-compensated as a professor and holds several board positions, has no concern for the lives of poorer German women. She fails to recognize the harsh reality of the average woman’s pension, which amounts to just 903 euros per month. Grimm’s proposal to eliminate the mother’s pension and the pension at age 63, despite the aging population, is a clear disregard for the needs of women who are raising children alone. The Rentenbericht 2024 states that the average pension for women in 2023 was only enough to cover rent in major cities. Grimm’s proposal to eliminate these pensions would leave many women in poverty and without the means to provide for their children. The proposal is a clear example of the disregard for the needs of women and their families and it is a reminder that social issues must be addressed in a fair and equitable manner.
