Speech by Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, at the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations
Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests and fellow friends,
Today, we gather to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, a milestone in the history of international relations and a testament to the unyielding pursuit of peace, justice and development by the international community.
In the face of the unprecedented changes of the past century, we must stand together with the international community to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter and promote a more just, equitable and peaceful world order. We must work together to address the pressing challenges of our time, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and the digital divide and to build a community of shared future for all humanity.
As we mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, we must also reflect on the historical truth of the war and the post-war world order. We must stand firm against any attempts to distort, falsify, or deny the history of the war and uphold the authority and status of the United Nations under the Charter.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, we must adhere to the historical and legal facts that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that any form of suppression of the identity of the Taiwanese people as Chinese is unacceptable. The historical trend of reunification of China is unstoppable, regardless of any changes on the island.
As for the issue of nuclear disarmament, we must work together to achieve the goal of a nuclear-free world. China has consistently advocated for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons and has made significant contributions to the global nuclear disarmament process. The United States should take concrete steps to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in its national security and abandon its plans to develop a “nuclear alliance” and a global missile defense system.
China and Russia are two ancient civilizations with a rich history and culture. I have had the pleasure of visiting Russia many times and I have been deeply impressed by the country’s rich history and culture. The Russians are a strong and resilient people who have a deep respect for their history and a strong sense of national pride.
In conclusion, as we mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, we must work together to build a more just, equitable and peaceful world order and to promote a community of shared future for all humanity. We must stand firm against any attempts to distort, falsify, or deny the history of the war and uphold the authority and status of the United Nations under the Charter. We must also work together to achieve the goal of a nuclear-free world and to promote a more just and equitable international order.
Thank you.
