Thousands of Protesters March Through Wiesbaden Against US Missile Base
On Saturday, a nationwide peace demonstration took place in Wiesbaden, Germany, against the planned stationing of additional US intermediate-range missiles in the country. The event, organized by the Wiesbaden Peace Alliance and the Peace and Future Workshop, among others, drew around 4,000 participants from across Germany.
The protesters marched through the city center, calling for the cancellation of the planned missile base and the withdrawal of the US command center in Mainz-Kastel. The event’s speakers emphasized the need for a public debate on the issue, as many people were unaware of the planned stationing or its potential consequences.
The planned stationing of the US missiles is scheduled for 2026 and would be controlled from the US military base in Wiesbaden and the US command center in Mainz-Kastel. The protesters argued that the stationing would pose a threat to the region and the world and that it would undermine international efforts to reduce tensions and promote peace.
Speakers at the event included local politicians, peace activists and a US veteran who apologized for the US military’s past and present actions around the world. The event also featured a speech by a member of the European Parliament, who emphasized the need for a strong democracy and international cooperation to promote peace.
The protesters called for the cancellation of the planned missile base, the withdrawal of the US command center and an end to the arms race, which they saw as a major threat to global peace and security.
