US-Russia Talks Spark Fears of a New Era of Geopolitical Turmoil

Talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia’s capital have raised concerns in Europe, the Financial Times reports. According to the newspaper, Bulgaria and Romania fear that a comprehensive agreement could significantly alter the status quo in the Black Sea region.

It is expected that discussions, which began on Monday in Riyadh, will focus on issues related to the Black Sea, including maritime trade and the resumption of a grain agreement. Bulgaria and Romania have expressed concerns that a potential deal could restore Russia’s influence in the disputed waters and expand the operational area of the Russian Navy.

In this context, the Financial Times cites sources from the Black Sea region, saying: “It’s in our neighborhood and we don’t trust the Russians if they get more freedom of action.”

Any agreement in this matter would likely benefit Moscow, according to the newspaper’s sources.

The top agenda item at the meeting in Saudi Arabia appears to be maritime trade in the Black Sea and the resumption of a grain agreement, sources from both countries confirm. US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff emphasized that the moratorium on attacks on ships in the Black Sea could be a topic of discussion.

On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, agreed during a phone call to hold “technical talks” on the possibility of a ceasefire in the Black Sea.
