Will She Unite the House or Face a Rebellion?

German CDU’s Union Faction in the Federal Parliament has unanimously agreed to nominate former Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner as the new President of the Federal Parliament. CDU Leader Friedrich Merz announced the decision in the late afternoon, stating that he expects the other factions in the 21st Federal Parliament to also approve the nomination, as is customary.

According to Klöckner, it is clear that the President of the Federal Parliament is to represent the entire parliament and this was also understood by her party leader, Merz, at the time of her nomination. For her upcoming task, it is important, Klöckner said, to review the parliamentary procedures to identify areas for improvement and it may be necessary to reassess the questioning rights as well.

Merz then pointed out that, of the Union’s parliamentarians, less than a handful are expected to vote against the planned debt package, scheduled for Tuesday and he expressed confidence that the proposal will pass the vote.
