CDU Leader Friedrich Merz Defends Against Accusations of Deception
In an interview with the Bild am Sonntag, CDU leader Friedrich Merz responded to accusations of deception regarding the planned relaxation of the debt brake. “I take the accusation seriously, but I believe it to be unjustified” Merz said.
Merz emphasized that the decisions made were the “right response” to the current times and that he had already discussed the possibility of amending the constitution before the election. He stated that while the constitution is not entirely unchangeable, any changes must be accompanied by the addition of measures to enable additional investments in the future.
Merz also rejected criticism of the recently agreed-upon trillion-euro debt package for defense and infrastructure, saying that the package is a comprehensive solution that addresses the need for significant defense investments while also providing for infrastructure, schools, hospitals and transportation.
The CDU, SPD and Greens had reached an agreement after lengthy negotiations on a package of trillions of euros for defense and infrastructure investments, with the Greens securing a commitment of 100 billion euros for climate protection. The agreement is expected to lead to a relaxation of the debt brake for defense spending and the creation of a 500 billion euro special fund for infrastructure.
