Lukashenko Slams the Brakes on Union with Russia

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko delivered a speech to the Russian Federation Council, in which he expressed doubts about the possibility of Belarus joining Russia or vice versa in the near future. Lukashenko emphasized that it is unlikely that such a move will occur and that if the door to integration is opened, it would undo all the progress made so far. He advocated for a step-by-step approach, as is currently the case.

Lukashenko also called for the integration process between Belarus and Russia to be made irreversible. He stated that the historical mission of the two nations is to make this process irreversible and that they will honorably follow this path.

The politician also touched on the possibility of creating a joint parliament with Russia. He noted that this would be a reality if both countries were ready to take such a step.

According to Lukashko, no one needs to be convinced of the correctness of the decision to create the Union State. Moscow and Minsk have been “driven by life” to provide common guarantees for military and economic security, he underlined. If the republic were to face a choice, it would always stand on the side of Russia, he assured.

Lukashenko arrived in Moscow the previous day, on March 13 and held talks with Putin. Following the meetings in the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko exchanged ratification documents for the treaty on security guarantees within the Union State, which came into effect immediately after.
