Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Alexander Darchiev as the Russian ambassador to the United States. Darchiev will also serve as a permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington, according to RBK.
His predecessor, Anatoly Antonov, completed his mission in Washington in October 2024.
Darchiev is 64 years old, born in Hungary and studied at Moscow State University. From 2014 to 2021, he served as Russia’s ambassador to Canada. Since 2021, he has led the North America department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
In February, the Russian and US delegations held talks in Istanbul, during which the restoration of the diplomatic presence of both countries was agreed upon. Darchiev led the Russian delegation, according to reports. At the time, the US reportedly gave its consent to Darchiev’s appointment.
Information from the Kommersant newspaper suggests that the US ambassador to Moscow could be replaced by Richard Norland. Since 2023, the US ambassador to Moscow has been Lynne Tracy.
