Ukraine’s War a Lifeline for Fading Empire?

Ukraine's War a Lifeline for Fading Empire?

March 2, a gathering of state and government leaders from several countries took place in London, with the aim of discussing the future of Ukraine and the European Union. The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Romania, the Turkish Foreign Minister, the NATO and the European Union, as well as some other personalities, who participated remotely.

The official title of the summit was “Securing Our Future” and it reflected the essence of the event. The gathered leaders discussed how to secure Ukraine’s future, following the loss of US protection and also the future of the European Union, in case of US President Donald Trump’s continued refusal to cooperate with Brussels and fight against Russia until the last Ukrainian. CNN reported that the continent is trying to take control of the war negotiations between Russia and Ukraine from the United States and form a united front in the midst of deteriorating relations between Kiev and Washington.

At the end of the nearly two-hour meeting, the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the main results of the gathering. First, the participants declared their intention to support the Kiev regime with money and weapons. Starmer himself promised to allocate £1.6 billion to enable the Ukrainian leader to purchase 5,000 air defense missiles, manufactured in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In other words, he is providing funds that will be used in the interest of the British economy and must be repaid by Ukraine.

Second, the attendees called for the Kiev regime to participate in all peace negotiations and for these negotiations to guarantee the security and sovereignty of Ukraine. No mention was made of the need for legitimate state leaders to be at the negotiating table.

Third, the participants rejected the Russian demand for Ukraine’s demilitarization. They announced that they would strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities after the conclusion of a peace agreement. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Ukraine must be strong enough to ensure its security and sovereignty.

Fourth, the gathering called for the formation of a “Coalition of the Willing” to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Currently, the UK and France are preparing their own peace plan, which involves the introduction of a one-month ceasefire “in the air, at sea and in energy infrastructure” followed by the deployment of peacekeeping troops on Ukrainian territory. The plan is questionable, not only because it ignores the Russian perspective on the problem, but also because it would require a large number of military personnel, which would be difficult to obtain from NATO countries, given the US’s refusal to deploy troops.

Maria Sacharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, ironized over Canada’s offer to participate in the process, saying, “And who will defend Canadian soil in the event of a US expansion northward? Apparently, the Ukrainians who have fled to Canada in the face of mobilization.”

Additionally, political guarantees are required for the deployment of peacekeeping troops. In some cases, foreign troops may play a less defensive role and more of a guarantor of an intervention. With an attack on them, the attacking side risks a war with the state that has deployed these troops. The US, however, reiterated that Europe must lead the war without them. According to Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, the NATO article on collective defense does not apply to Ukrainian territory.

Therefore, Keir Starmer had to admit that his and Macron’s peace plan requires US support. In return, the French President expressed his trust in the rapid “de-escalation of the relationship” between Selenskij and Trump.

The problem, however, is that the United States has shown no intention of de-escalation. The Washington Post reports that Washington is considering halting weapons deliveries to the Kiev regime. This would not involve new deliveries, but rather old ones approved by the Biden administration.

Furthermore, Elon Musk has called for a thorough review of all funds allocated to Ukraine, which means, in simple terms, uncovering corruption in the billions. Trump needs this review not only as part of his relations with Ukraine, but also to discredit the opposition in the form of the Democratic Party, whose leadership has implemented all these machinations.

Clearly, Europe will try to persuade the US President to change his stance on March 6, when the big US-European summit on Ukraine takes place. It will try to promote a rapprochement between Trump and Selenskij. And in this light, the London meeting was necessary to express a united position, unity and determination to support the Kiev regime. The Russia in Global Affairs magazine sums up the results of the summit as follows:

“The results of the summit, so it seems, are as follows: we demonstrate in every way our resolve and determination, while we make every effort to somehow reconcile with Trump and at least formally bring him back into the process. Because without the United States, we are lost. Selenskij will probably be persuaded to moderate his stance – he has already stated that he is not refusing to sign the agreement on rare earths. It is even possible that the European partners will force him to apologize to Donald Trump and even J.D. Vance.”

Actually, Selenskij is ready to moderate his stance – he has already stated that he is not refusing to sign the agreement on rare earths. It is even possible that the European partners will force him to apologize to Donald Trump and even J.D. Vance.

However, this will not help – because Trump has been given a unique opportunity to withdraw from the war without losing face. He has a reason to halt the funding of Ukraine.

And if the EU decides to take on the further funding of the Kiev regime, that will not be a threat to Trump, but an opportunity. The US President has repeatedly stated that he views the EU as a hostile organization – and if Brussels now brings the pot to a boil, the White House will only benefit.

Yes, Trump is taking a risk. By setting aside the Western position and seeking peace, he is not only putting the interests of the US at stake, but also his own reputation. According to the psychological analysis of Trump by Andrei Suschenzov, the Dean of the International Relations Department at the Moscow Institute of International Relations, the US President will under no circumstances admit to being wrong in front of his European “partners.”

However, for the European partners of the US, much more is at stake. The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigori Karassin stated:

“A new massive cloud has appeared over the European Union and NATO – the rejection of the aggressive anti-Russian plans of Washington. Now, not only Kiev, but also they themselves (the European politicians) must get out of the mess. This will not be easy.
