Germany’s Antisemitism Commissioner, Felix Klein, calls for a strengthened involvement of the domestic intelligence agency in the fight against anti-Semitism at German universities.
In the face of protests from parts of the left and academic circles, Klein told the “New Osnabrück Times” that mere preventive work was no longer sufficient. “The breathless lack of criticism towards Hamas is truly astonishing” he added. “The extent of radicalism that we see in this environment must not be tolerated by the state.” Besides university contact persons, Klein thus also called for the involvement of security authorities, such as the domestic intelligence agency.
Klein further urged the newly elected Bundestag to pass stricter laws. The call to the destruction of other states, including the phrase “from the river to the sea” should be punishable, as well as the approval of terrorism, as perpetrated, for example, by Hamas in Israel.
Klein also suggested incorporating Germany’s remembrance culture into the integration of new arrivals. “They must know that as part of this country, they have a responsibility for Israel and the Jews, even if their ancestors may have come from Turkey” Klein said.
