Insured vs. State: Billion-Dollar Showdown for Hospital Upgrades

German health insurance funds are demanding billions of euros from a potential “special fund” for infrastructure investments. The head of the German health insurance fund DAK, Andreas Storm, told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the 50 billion-euro transformation fund for the reorganization of the hospital landscape must be fully financed from these funds.

“It cannot remain the case that the statutorily insured pay half of the planned 50 billion-euro transformation fund, at a cost of 25 billion euros” the insurance chief said. “This is clearly a matter of future investments in infrastructure, which the state must take over.”

Storm also called for the state’s share in the transformation fund to be paid from the “special fund”. The financial situation of the states is also strained, the insurance chief argued.
