German Greens Criticize CDU Leader’s Proposal for Bundeswehr Funding
The German Greens have strongly criticized CDU leader Friedrich Merz for his sudden withdrawal of a short-term reform of the debt brake. “Friedrich Merz endangers with his debt brake ideology the security and peace in Europe” said Andreas Audretsch, the Greens’ parliamentary group vice-chair, to the Rheinische Post (Monday’s edition).
“A further special allowance for the Bundeswehr would be only irresponsible Merz ideology and would put at risk the security and future of Germany. It is correct, however, to fundamentally reform the debt brake to make Germany and Europe more independent and stronger” the Green politician said. “We must invest in the Bundeswehr, but we cannot play that off against the stabilization of our society as a whole. Both are important” Audretsch added.
“We must invest in independence, in domestic renewable energy, or the chip production in Germany. In infrastructure, IT security, energy networks, stable bridges and the rail network. In hospitals and civil defense” the Green politician said. Additional aid for Ukraine is now acute. “The SPD must give up its blockade, so we can finally release the planned three billion euros” he demanded.
