German Green Co-Chair Franziska Brantner has accused the Union’s Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz of intentionally delaying support for Ukraine.
According to the “Spiegel”, Brantner stated, “It makes me angry that Friedrich Merz was not willing to act in a timely manner. What still needs to happen for Friedrich Merz to recognize the signs of the times?”
Brantner referenced the collapse of the coalition and the election of Trump as US President, saying, “It was foreseeable that Europe would be exposed to a neo-imperialist policy of Trump’s. Trump is throwing Ukraine under the bus with a declaration and I do not understand why no concrete proposal from Mr. Merz is available, which does justice to the currently threatened situation.”
The Greens had offered the Union’s Chancellor candidate a reform of the debt brake in the past three months to move things forward. Brantner demanded investments in infrastructure, network expansion, climate protection and local governments, saying, “It is clear that we cannot only help the Bundeswehr and Ukraine and at the same time leave bridges and schools in disrepair in the country.
