A bus accident in Thailand on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of 18 people and more than 30 others injured. According to several local media outlets, the vehicle involved in the accident was a double-decker tourist bus. The bus reportedly skidded off the road on a mountainous route in the eastern part of the country. The injured were taken to two nearby hospitals. Seventeen people died at the scene, with one more succumbing to injuries in the hospital.
The bus was on a study tour for adults in the eastern region of Prachin Buri at the time of the accident. According to the authorities, the brakes of the vehicle failed, causing the driver to lose control, on a mountain road.
Thailand ranks ninth in the number of road fatalities among its member states, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of road safety. The WHO reports that an average of 50 people die in road accidents in the East Asian country every day.
