After the CDU’s failure to reach the 30 percent mark in the federal election, the party aims to quickly review its campaign. “The general secretary has already announced a result-free analysis of the campaign to the presidency and the federal board, which will take place shortly” a CDU spokesperson told the Rheinische Post (Thursday edition).
According to the preliminary official results, the CDU has fallen significantly short of its expectations, securing the most votes but with a result that is also the second worst in a federal election. During the campaign, CDU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz had said that the voter potential was above 35 percent.
Calls for the CDU to review its results have also come from the SPD: “The SPD is aware of its responsibility in the face of a disastrous election night. But the CDU also achieved its second worst result since the founding of the Federal Republic on Sunday” SPD faction vice Dirk Wiese told the Rheinische Post.
“It’s a bit of a letdown, despite all the euphoria in the Adenauer House” Wiese said. “I’m surprised – by the sudden turns of events. Until the election day, the debt brake was still a sacred cow for the CDU” he said. “That reason is finally prevailing, I welcome that – but I don’t know about the half-life of this realization.
