According to a survey conducted by the opinion research institute Insa for T-Online, the majority of Germans do not believe that the Free Democratic Party (FDP) will recover after its failure to clear the 5% threshold in the federal election. The survey found that 51% of respondents do not think the FDP will make a political comeback, while 26% consider a recovery likely and 22% are undecided.
Opinions on the FDP’s future differ significantly depending on the respondent’s party affiliation. SPD, AfD, Left and BSW voters are particularly skeptical, with 63% of SPD supporters, 61% of AfD voters, 60% of Left voters and 58% of BSW voters believing a comeback is unlikely.
In contrast, CDU/CSU and Green party supporters are less negative, with 44% of CDU/CSU voters and 43% of Green voters not expecting the FDP to recover. Interestingly, a significant portion of FDP supporters themselves also express doubts, with 29% of FDP voters questioning the party’s ability to recover.
However, a majority of FDP supporters, at 54%, still believe the party can stabilize after its failure to clear the 5% threshold. A similar proportion, 39%, of CDU/CSU voters, also hold this view.
The online survey was conducted on February 24, 2025 and involved 1,000 respondents aged 18 and above from Germany, with 834 respondents providing party affiliations.
